UCAT Bursary Scheme

Details of the 2021 Bursary Scheme will be published in early 2021.   The information below is subject to change in 2021.

Our Bursary Scheme enables UK candidates in financial need to sit the UCAT for free.

Bursary scheme opens: 2 June 2021 at 9am BST
Application deadline: 29 September 2021 at 4pm BST
Voucher expiry date: 15 October 2021

Bursary Eligibility

To be eligible for a bursary you only need to meet one of the criteria below and provide one piece of evidence to support your application.

If you are over 21 but still living at home, you need to be in receipt of a qualifying award or benefit to support a bursary application. 

Criteria, Eligibility and Evidence Required

Free School Meals

  • Please provide a recent letter from your school/college confirming you receive free school meals (local authority funded only).

16 to 19 Bursary (England), or Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) (Scotland, Wales or NI)

  • Please provide your official award letter for academic year 2020/21 or 2021/22.  We do not accept evidence that relates to scholarships/bursaries at independent or fee-paying schools.

Learner Support (FE 19+) or equivalent FE funding for Scotland, Wales or NI

  • Please provide your official award letter for academic year 2020/21 or 2021/22.

Student Finance England Maintenance Grant or Maintenance Loan* (full-rate), or
Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS) Young Students’/Independent Students’ Bursary (full-rate), or 
Student Finance Wales or Northern Ireland Maintenance Grant (full-rate)

  • Please provide your Student Finance or SAAS award letter for academic year 2020/21 or 2021/22.  

  • You must be in receipt of a full-rate means-tested award.  Please ensure you include the pages that show the means tested grant/bursary element.

*If your course started after August 2016, we will accept evidence of a full-rate means-tested Maintenance Loan from Student Finance England.  Please ensure you check what qualifies as a Full-rate Maintenance Loan here BEFORE you apply.

Income Support, or
Job Seeker's Allowance (JSA), or 
Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)

  • If you or a parent/guardian you live with are in receipt of one of these benefits please provide an award letter (all pages) from the UK Jobcentre Plus, dated 2021.

  • If it is your parent/guardian in receipt of JSA or ESA then it must be the income-based benefit (e.g. means-tested) and not contribution-based.

Universal Credit

  • If you or a parent/guardian you live with are in receipt of Universal Credit (income used to calculate the award must be less than 35k) please provide a recent statement from 2021. 

  • We must be able to see the name of the claimant and address, the date, and the take-home pay for the period.  Click for an example.

Working or Child Tax Credit

  • If you or a family member you live with are in receipt of Tax Credits please provide an award letter from 2020/21 or 2021/22.  You must be named on the award and the household income used to calculate the award must be less than 35k.

  • Please ensure you provide both the pages that show this or your application will be rejected.  Click for an example.

Asylum Support

  • If you or a parent/guardian you live with are in receipt of this support please provide an official award letter, dated 2021.

We DO NOT accept this as evidence: P60 (end of year certificate); annual accounts; council tax/housing/child benefit letters.  


Application Process

Step 1: Register (create a web account)

  • You cannot register until 2 June 2021.

Step 2: Complete the online bursary application form (available from 2 June 2021) by the application deadline.

  • Applications with correct supporting evidence must be received by 4pm (BST) on 29 September 2021 or they will not be processed.  You will need your candidate ID (which you can find on your web account) and a scan/photo of your evidence.

Step 3: Receive your bursary voucher code within 5 working days by email.

  • If you have not received an email from our office within this time please email the UCAT Office and we will check on progress. Before contacting us please check that an email has not been sent to your junk or spam folder. Please do not upload multiple applications.

Step 4: Book your test by the booking deadline (noon BST 28 September 2021)

  • During the booking checkout process there is an option to 'add a voucher or promo code'.

Important information

  • If you have already paid for your test you can still apply for a bursary.  When your application has been approved you will need will need to email Pearson VUE Customer Services with your bursary voucher code to arrange for a refund. 

  • If you have queries about why your application has been rejected please email the UCAT Office. Do not submit another application. 

  • If you have booked a test using a bursary voucher and then decide not to sit the UCAT, you MUST cancel your test (giving the required minimum notice) otherwise the UCAT Consortium will incur a charge for your missed appointment.  We therefore reserve the right to request repayment of the full test fee from any candidate who fails to attend a test paid for with a bursary voucher. 

  • Data collected from bursary applications may be used for research purposes.  Details regarding how we collect, store and process your data can be found in our Data Privacy Policy

  • When UCAT results are delivered to our Consortium Universities we also indicate whether a candidate has been in receipt of a bursary.  This will not disadvantage your application in any way and they may use this information to help identify candidates from backgrounds under-represented at University.  To ensure your result is flagged in this way you must have redeemed your bursary voucher by 15 October 2021.
