The University Clinical Aptitude Test is used in the selection process by the majority of UK University Medical and Dental Schools.

Test Day

The UCAT is a compulsory entry requirement for our Consortium universities.  In 2020, candidates have the option to take their test in a Pearson VUE test centre or as an online-proctored test (using OnVUE).  Universities expect candidates to explore all options to be able to test safely.  

Despite the testing solutions on offer, some candidates will experience mitigating circumstances that may affect their testing experience in 2020.


2020 COVID-19 advice 

  • Do not attend a Pearson VUE Test Centre if you have any symptoms of coronavirus. Please follow current government guidelines.  Please book or reschedule your test to a later date, after any mandatory self-isolation period.  Please refer to the section on illness below.
  • You may live in a location where there are currently no test centres open or within travelling distance or government restrictions mean you are unable to travel to a test centre. It is possible that test centres may reopen or government advice will change, at which point attending a test centre may become an option.  You are advised to check availability regularly; your web account is the most up-to-date place to do this.  You could also consider taking the UCAT Online.  If you have very specific circumstances that we need to take account of you should contact the UCAT Office.

General illness or personal circumstances

The UCAT Consortium Test Centre and UCAT Online Exam Rules state that candidates who present themselves to test are declaring themselves fit to sit the test.  

  • If you are aware of anything that might affect your performance on the day, you should not sit the test.  This applies even if you fall ill or experience issues on the day of your test.   
  • If you are not fit to sit your test, you must reschedule your appointment to a later date, even if this means losing the test fee. 
  • If you plan to take the test in the final weeks of testing, you may encounter difficulties in rescheduling within the test window. You may have to travel much further to find an available test centre or there may not be a convenient OnVUE appointment.  This is why we advise all candidates to test early in the cycle.  If you are not fit to sit your test but choose to do so against this advice, we will not consider such issues as mitigating circumstances.  
  • We never make an adjustment to a candidate’s score to reflect temporary illness/injury or some other event outside of the candidate’s control at the time of the test.

If you are concerned that illness or personal circumstances means you will not be ‘fit to sit’ the test throughout the 2020 test cycle please contact the UCAT Office for advice.

International Candidates

Consortium Universities normally expect international applicants to take the test, which could mean travelling to another country.  You should also consider taking the UCAT Online.  If you have very specific circumstances that we need to take account of you should contact the UCAT Office

Other circumstances

If you have very specific circumstances that mean you cannot test at home (UCAT Online) or in a test centre, you should contact the UCAT Office for advice.


The UCAT Consortium and our partner Pearson VUE aim to provide a straightforward and convenient way of sitting your test in a business like environment. However, occasionally things may go wrong and we have put systems in place to deal with such circumstances.

Reporting issues during your test

  • If you experience an issue at a test centre, raise your hand to notify the invigilator.
  • If you experience an issue during the UCAT Online, make contact with the proctor by starting a chat session from the exam window. The proctor can make contact with you by starting a chat session from the exam window, or by calling the phone number, you provided during exam check-in.  It is acceptable to keep the mobile phone nearby but not within arm's reach. All contact with the proctor is in English.
  • The invigilator/proctor cannot answer questions related to test content.


  • If you become ill during your test, notify the invigilator/proctor.
  • If you are not well enough to continue, you should ask the invigilator/proctor to end your test.  You then need to contact the UCAT Office as soon as possible.
  • If you choose to continue testing, it is unlikely that UCAT will consider this as mitigating circumstances.  

Hardware/software problems

  • If you experience problems with hardware or software, notify the invigilator/proctor immediately.
  • If you do not report the problem, it will not be considered as mitigating circumstances by UCAT. 

Noise disturbance or other distractions

  • If you experience noise disturbance or other distractions at a test centre notify the invigilator immediately. If you do not report the problem, it will not be considered as mitigating circumstances by UCAT. 
  • If you are testing at home, you should make sure that you are not disturbed during the whole of your test. If this occurs, the proctor will make contact with you by starting a chat session from the exam window or calling your mobile, and your test may be terminated.

Incident numbers and investigations

If you raise an issue with the invigilator/proctor this will be recorded as an incident.

  • In the event of a reported incident or if a general incident affects you, you will be given an incident number by the test centre or proctor. Please make sure you obtain this incident number before leaving the test centre or ending your test session.  If you forget, you can also obtain your incident number by contacting Customer Services.
  • We rarely follow up incidents that are not reported to test centre staff or proctors on the day of testing.  
  • If you wish an incident to be followed up you must contact Pearson VUE Customer Services, within 1 working day of your test. Pearson VUE will investigate the incident and report the outcome back to you by email within 5 working days.  To obtain an update on an investigation please contact Pearson VUE Customer Services and quote the incident number. 

Candidate Complaints 

If you are unhappy with the outcome of the investigation by Pearson VUE, the UCAT Consortium has put in place a Complaints and Appeals Policy.

Please note that Pearson VUE and the UCAT Consortium do not deal with complaints about admissions decisions, which should be addressed to the individual university concerned.
